Distinguished Scholar Award
"In conjunction with the annual Celebration of Scholorship, the URC sponsors a program of annual awards to three distinguished scholars. The award is $1500 and is commensurate with the annual Distinguished Teaching Awards. Nomintaions are made by peers and awardees are selected by a committee of faculty members from related disciplines and endorsed by the full Council."

IMAGE: Dr. Micheal Hu
Michael Hu, Ph.D., received a B.A. in business administration from Ohio University in 1970. He earned an M.B.A. (1972) and a Ph.D. (1977) from the University of Minnesota. Hu joined the Kent State faculty in 1981. He has co-authored two books, published 100 papers in refereed journals and made more than 100 paper presentations at national and international conferences. His research focuses on three areas: international business, marketing research and artificial neural networks. He is best known for his work on frequent flyer programs and on Sino-foreign joint ventures. He is primarily responsible for teaching marketing management and marketing research at the MBA level. Hu has an international reputation as an expert on Sino-foreign business ventures and investment. His research has contributed substantially to an understanding of consumer responses to surveys. Hu’s paper “Forecasting With Neural Networks: The State of the Art” was named an outstanding paper in 1998-99 by the International Institute of Forecasters. He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award (1995).

IMAGE: Marvin D. Troutt
Marvin D. Troutt is currently Professor in the Department of M&IS. Previously, he was The Rehn Research Professor of Management at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois. He has held an external academic advisor appointment with the Applied Mathematics Department at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he served as Visiting Fellow in the 1994/95 academic year. He received the Ph.D in Mathematical Statistics from The University of Illinois at Chicago in 1975, the M.S. in Applied Mathematics in 1970 and the B.S. in Mathematics and Statistics in 1966 from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He has served as an Associate Editor of Decision Sciences since 1987. He has coauthored a research monograph, Vertical Density Representation, and his articles have appeared in Decision Sciences, Management Science, Journal of the Operational Research Society, European Journal of Operational Research, Operations Research, Decision Support Systems and others. His current research interests include the statistics of performance data and applications of optimization methods.

IMAGE: Dr. Raj Aggarwal
Raj Aggarwal, Ph.D., has an undergraduate degree in industrial engineering, a M.B.A. in operations management, and a doctorate in corporate finance and international business. His professional interests include finance, international business, e-commerce and strategic analysis, and his scholarly work covers asset pricing, investment management, banking and international finance. Prior to serving as the Firestone Chair in Finance at Kent State, he was the Mellen Chair in Finance at John Carroll; he also has taught at Harvard, Hawaii, Michigan, Seton Hall, South Carolina and Toledo. He has worked as an engineer, financial analyst, strategic planner, department chair, consultant and corporate board member. He is the author of 12 books and more than 50 scholarly papers in leading finance, economics, international business, marketing and management journals. Aggarwal is a Fellow of the Academy of International Business, has been a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar in Southeast Asia and has received many teaching and research honors.

IMAGE: Dr. John K. Ryans
Dr. John K. Ryans, Jr. is an emeritus professor of Marketing and International Business, and a frequent speaker/consultant to the business community. Among his eighteen books are Marketing Strategy for the New Europe, Marketing High Technology, and International Business Classics. Widely recognized in the international community,he was one of five international marketing scholars selected for the Danish Summer Research Institute in both 1990 and 1991 and has just been elected Fellow of the Academy of International Business. Dr. Ryans has just served on a number of key national task selection committees of the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Council for International Business and the World Trade Institute (New York). He has served as Schering-Plough Distinguished Visiting Professor of International Corporate Communications at Fairleigh-Dickson University, Owens-Illinois Visiting Professor at the University of Toledo and Visiting Professor at Columbia University.
