2002-03 MATCHETTE LECTURES
Funding provided through a grant from the Franklin J. Matchette Foundation
General Theme:
Nation, Society, Community: Reflections on Ties that Bind
The Department of Philosophy at Kent State University is pleased to announce the Kent State University Matchette Lectures for 2002-03. The theme for the lectures is "Nation, Society, Community: Reflections on Ties that Bind."
The aim of the lecture series is to reflect on the nature of community itself. Many philosophical questions presuppose or otherwise involve the notion of a community. Further, in the wake of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, we have all been challenged to reflect on the various and competing allegiances we have to the various communities to which we belong. Some questions that will be discussed are:
- Who or what comprises the community?
- Is there only one community or are there many?
- If there are many, which communities are relevantly appealed to in various philosophical contexts?
- Is the community something real or only a useful construct?
- Can we sensibly talk about possible, non-actual communities?
