Winter storm gives TV2 suprise
head start on broadcast schedule

The TV2 news and technical staffs were scheduled to start broadcasting from their new digital HD studio at 5:30 on Feb. 12.

A winter storm that closed the university on that date changed all that.

As soon as the university announced it was closing at 12:30 p.m., staff in the new converged newsroom went to work.

TV2 News Director Kaitlyn Lionti and a small group of staffers began preparing a 10 minute special newscast for 1 p.m., writing a script, shooting video and putting together a weather report.

Black Squirrel Radio News Director Amanda Kelley updated the station's news podcast with the latest weather and closing information.

KentNewsNet.com uploaded a bulletin about school closing within minutes of the announcement. Staff also uploaded the updated BSR podcast and, later, the TV2 broadcast.

TV2, with a skeleton crew and new faces staffing still stores, switchers and other equipment, did a quick runthrough and went live at 2 p.m.

KentNewsNet editor, Kristen Russo, gets ready to upload the TV2 newscast to the Web site.
