Communication Studies Major

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies is a 45-credit hour degree program.

To be admitted to the Pre-COMM program, students must have a minimum  of a 2.25 overall gpa. Students who meet Kent State University's admission standards as entering freshmen or transfer students with an overall 2.25 gpa from their previous college will be admitted as Pre-Comm majors.

To be admitted to the Communication Studies major, students must complete COMM 20000, Foundations of Communication, with a minimum grade of "C" and have an overall GPA of 2.25. A 2.25 GPA is required in all COMM coursework for graduation. See the latest catalog for further description of the courses.

Students should complete this course as soon as possible as it is the prerequisite for most upper division courses

Diversity Requirement (3 hours) [Students must complete a two course diversity requirement, consisting of one with a domestic (U.S.) focus and one with a global focus. The domestic-focus course is fulfilled in this major with the required course JMC 20001 Media, Power & Culture. The global-focus course may be fulfilled in the major requirements with COMM 35852 Intercultural Communication.)

Electives for Interpersonal, Organizational and Public Communication Concentrations:
12-15 hours, 9 of which must be upper-division (Note: this allows or completion of a second concentration, if desired). A writing intensive class must be included in electives, if not part of track selected above. Only 6 hours of Internship (45092), Individual Investigation (45196), and Workshop (45093) combined may count in the 12 upper division COMM hours. Workshops (COMM 45093) are limited to 3 semester hours toward the major.

Electives for Applied Communication Concentration:
15 hours of electives from courses in COMM (any course not in core or concentration), JMC or VCD, 9 of which must be upper division. At least 6 hours of these electives must be from JMC or VCD. May include no more than 6 hours combined from Internship (45092), Individual Investigation (45196), or Workshop (54093) courses.

Admission Requirements:

1.    A grade of C (2.00) or higher in COMM 20000 (Foundations of Communication) and a minimum of 2.25 cumulative GPA are required to be admitted into the Communication Studies major.   
2.    Students with a minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA, transfer students with a minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA from their previous colleges, and students who meet Kent State University's admission standards as entering freshman will be admitted as Pre-COMM majors until the standards above are met (see #1).   

Graduation Requirements:

1.    Students must earn 121 semester hours for graduation.   
2.    Students must earn 39 upper division hours to graduate.   
3.    A minimum overall GPA of 2.00 is needed to graduate.   
4.    A minimum GPA of 2.25 in Communication Studies major is required to graduate.   
5.    A  grade of C (2.00) or better is required in COMM 46091Senior Seminar) and in writing intensive courses to graduate.   
6.    No more than 12 semester hours of course work may be taken pass/fail and only one course per semester. Only general elective course work may be taken pass/fail. None of the courses on the LER list may be taken pass/fail.
